Microsoft has begun testing an ad-supported game streaming tier on Xbox, rolling it out first to members of the Xbox Insider program. The pilot lets players stream select titles from their library for free, with sessions capped at one hour per device per supported region. Rather than interrupting gameplay, ads run before each session starts — Xbox has described it as "up to two" minutes of advertising in exchange for an hour of play. The move mirrors the ad-supported tiers already common among video streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Prime Video, and arrives as Microsoft continues to look for ways to broaden access to cloud gaming beyond paid Game Pass subscriptions. It's also a notable response to an ongoing hardware affordability crisis affecting the console market: with supply and pricing pressures making traditional hardware upgrades harder to justify for some players, a free, ad-supported streaming option offers a lower-barrier way to keep playing. Microsoft frames the approach matter-of-factly, noting that "advertising has existed in gaming for decades." No timeline has been given yet for a wider rollout beyond the Insider test group.
