The landscape of video game distribution is on the verge of a seismic shift, and not everyone is celebrating. Legendary game creator Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear, Death Stranding) recently shared his deep concerns regarding Sony’s confirmed timeline to phase out physical PlayStation game discs entirely by 2028. Speaking at the Il Cinema in Piazza film festival in Italy, the director expressed that the news made him feel "really sad". The Danger of "Turning the Tap" Kojima highlighted a critical distinction between current digital downloads and a pure streaming future. While a downloaded digital game still leaves the data residing directly on your local hardware, a shift to total streaming changes the rules of ownership entirely. Comparing a streaming-only model to services like Netflix, Kojima noted: "There is a server somewhere, and you essentially just have the right to turn the tap, and when you do, the data flows out... the consequence of that is that you don't actually possess the data yourself." Geopolitics and Media Erasure The most alarming aspect of a streaming-only landscape, according to Kojima, is how easily access can be revoked due to shifting corporate policies, international relations, or political changes. If a server goes offline or a license expires, the consumer loses the ability to watch or play the media they love. "That is what is frightening," Kojima warned, urging both the gaming and film communities to keep this reality in mind as digital-only ecosystems draw closer.
