IllFonic has confirmed the cancellation of Halloween: The Game on PlayStation in Japan after failing to secure a CERO rating due to visceral violence and nudity. IllFonic has announced that the PlayStation 5 version of Halloween: The Game will no longer release in Japan after the title was denied a domestic age rating from Japan's Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO). According to a statement shared by the development team, the rating was denied due to the game's high levels of visceral violence and nudity. Rather than making substantial alterations to pass domestic review guidelines, the studio decided against censoring the project. We have determined that regulating the content to achieve compliance would significantly compromise the worldview of the original film, and would also prevent us from providing the gameplay experience that players expect. Refunds are scheduled to be processed by the platform for players who pre-ordered the PS5 version. Why the PlayStation Version Was Singled Out The cancellation specifically impacts the PlayStation 5 release in the region. Under Sony's domestic store policies in Japan, titles intended for adult audiences typically require direct approval and rating from CERO to be sold on the platform. In contrast, digital releases on platforms such as PC and Xbox utilize the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) system. As a result, digital editions of Halloween: The Game are still scheduled to launch in Japan across Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. A String of Classification Troubles This is not the first regulatory obstacle the asymmetrical slasher game has encountered ahead of its launch. Earlier in August, the Australian Classification Board refused classification for the title altogether, blocking its official sale in Australia due to depictions of drug use tied to gameplay incentives.
