D&D Icons Reunites Legendary Storytellers Wizards of the Coast announced D&D Icons, a new initiative designed to pair legendary creators from the game's 50-year history with current design teams to shape future release slates. Actor, producer, and avid player Joe Manganiello has been appointed Chief Creative Officer of the program. The goal is to bring together legendary creators with the current design team to help shape future content. Key creators and projects under the D&D Icons banner include: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman returning to oversee their first official Dragonlance TTRPG book in over 20 years R.A. Salvatore developing new adventures featuring the drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden in the Forgotten Realms Luke Gygax creating a Greyhawk adventure based on unpublished notes and material left behind by his father, D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, aiming for launch as early as 2027 Joe Manganiello publishing Death Saves, an official heavy-metal dark fantasy campaign setting based on his personal homebrew campaign Dark Sun Revamped as D&D's First 18+ Mature Setting The post-apocalyptic world of Athas is returning to 5th Edition in February 2027 to anchor the Season of Survival. It marks D&D's first official mature-rated (18+) setting, with books set to be sold shrink-wrapped in stores due to graphic depictions of bloodshed, gore, and adult themes. Athas isn't the world you save. It is the world you survive. It is a brutal place where survival is its own act of defiance. Spanning nearly 500 pages, the product line includes the Blood and Power gameplay expansion, the Edge of Oblivion setting guide, and a limited-edition alternate-art Player's Handbook. The expansion formally introduces the Psion as the second new core class added to 5th Edition since 2014, featuring Psionic Energy Dice, body-morphing abilities, and optional decapitation rules for extra combat brutality. Universes Beyond Brings World of Warcraft and Star Wars to Tabletop Borrowing the successful crossover model established by Magic: The Gathering, D&D is launching its own Universes Beyond line. The initiative debuts on November 17, 2026 (with early access on November 3) with a 256-page Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft setting book. Universes Beyond is D&D's opportunity to bring incredible, handpicked collaborations to our world of collaborative storytelling. The World of Warcraft book introduces 11 playable species (including Pandaren and Draenei), 9 subclasses adapting iconic MMO roles like Death Knights and Demon Hunters, 60 spells, 26 magic items, 23 factions, and 7 dungeons modeled after classic raids. A companion Icecrown Citadel map pack includes a high-level digital adventure culminating in a fight against Arthas, the Lich King, alongside physical Hasbro miniatures of Arthas and Illidan Stormrage. Wizards concluded the keynote by bringing Darth Vader onto the stage to announce that Star Wars will anchor D&D's second Universes Beyond release during the Season of Rebellion in late 2027.
